Shyne Phiri

Shyne is a choreographer, movement director and former contemporary dancer from Zimbabwe. He won a scholarship at the National Ballet School in Harare then co-founded Zimbabwe’s first contemporary dance company Tumbuka Dance with Neville Chamberlain of Pheonix Dance. They toured internationally and he was nominated as best male contemporary dancer at Dance Umbrella in Johannesburg in 1994. He was featured in TV documentaries and feature films, including Portraits Of Africa on BBC2 & ‘Front Row’ on South African TV.

In 2004, he was due to work with Dance Theatre of Harlem but was involved in a car accident that left him completely paralysed. He managed to regain some movement but still suffer restrictions in his right side.

In 2006, he moved to Malawi, and later became the movement director of the award-winning arts NGO Nanzikambe. He trained young Malawian men and set up Malawi’s first contemporary dance company. While working on a cross-cultural collaboration called Tariro he met his British wife Antonia Windsor and moved to the UK. He now has British passport and the right to work in the UK. 

His first child was born in 2012, followed shortly by two more. Since then, he’s juggled parenting and managing his disability, with several collaborations and commissions:
